Sony Action Camcorder Beats GoPro With Hi-Def And Slo-Mo

Sony Action Camcorder Beats GoPro With Hi-Def And Slo-Mo

Slim, sleek and sporty.

What I want in a rugged sports camera: High definition (to see every detail), a waterproof case (so I don?t have to worry about taking a dip), a slim and stylish body (to match my own!) and probably some other things I never thought of yet.

And here comes the Sony HDR-AS10 HD Action Camcorder, which takes care of all of these bullet points, including the last one.

What?s the mystery feature? A super-fast frame rate. No jaggy slo-mo here: the Action Cam shoots 720p at 120fps. Slow that down to a TV-standard 30fps and you get quarter-speed slow motion, all without jerks or stutters (unless your sports companions are morons with speech impediments). Shoot at regular speed and you get 1080p.

Instead of being merely waterproof, the Action Cam comes with a waterproof housing, good for down to 60 meters (197 feet), and weighs a featherweight 90 grams (just over three ounces). The lens is a Carl Zeiss Tessar which shoots a 170? field of view, the sound is stereo, the start/stop button is huge and you shoot to regular SD cards.

The price for this pocket wonder? A mere $200, which puts this squarely into GoPro territory. In fact, I?d pick this one, all other stuff being equal. Why? Because I missed an entry on my list at the top of the post. I also want my cameras to be cool-looking, so I don?t look like a dork. And the GoPro, great as it is, is a dorkathon waiting for the starter pistol.

Pentagon fighting Taliban on social media front

The U.S. military is ramping up efforts to counter the Taliban's growing presence on social media sites by aggressively responding to falsehoods and reporting violations of the sites' guidelines on violent threats, experts say.

Twitter accounts or websites associated with militant groups typically take responsibility for attacks whether or not they had anything to do with them.

But most of the information they provide is either exaggerated or false, said Army Lt. Col. T.G. Taylor, a spokesman for U.S. Central Command.

The Pentagon has become quicker and more effective at issuing rebuttals through Twitter and other venues, said Christopher Paul, an information operations analyst at RAND Corp.

"Insurgents have always wanted to make themselves look like winners," Paul said. "The Internet makes it a whole lot easier."

Winning the information war is particularly important in insurgencies, where shaping public opinion can count as much as what happens on the battlefield.

The Taliban and other militant groups issue statements and video to create a perception of chaos in the country and to undermine the legitimacy of the Afghan government.

Despite the Taliban's hostility to modernity, they have adapted well to social media, military officials said.

"They're all over Twitter," said Marine Lt. Col. Stewart Upton, a spokesman for Regional Command Southwest. "They're incessantly tweeting."

Internet access remains limited in Afghanistan, but increasingly people have cellphones and Taliban claims often spread from social media to satellite television and local news outlets. Militants also use a variety of languages on the Internet, including English.

The military has long struggled with how to counter enemy propaganda in Afghanistan. Insurgents post claims quickly and the military had been slow to respond, waiting to get the full story.

"We're getting better," Paul said. "There's a practical limit to how good we can get."

The military says it has reported militants when they have directly promoted violence.

Twitter could suspend an account if a user violates policies. Twitter spokeswoman Rachael Horwitz said the social networking service does not discuss specific accounts, including military requests.

Over the past year, Central Command, which oversees U.S. military operations in the Middle East, has reported about 10 social media violations by militants, Taylor said. In general, however, officers say they prefer to engage the Taliban openly rather than impede their right to free speech by trying to deny them access to the Internet.

"That would make it look like we're afraid to engage them on the moral battlefield and we're not," Upton said.

The more aggressive approach seems to be working. Increasingly, local media is seeking out the coalition for its side of the story and eying Taliban claims more skeptically than in the past, the military said.

This week the Taliban took to Twitter to deny responsibility for the recent beheadings of 17 Afghans. The Afghan government dismissed the statement, saying the Taliban was responsible.

Obama visits Texas to mark Iraq?

WASHINGTON (AP) ? President Barack Obama is serving up an election-year reminder that he ended the Iraq war, visiting a Texas military base two years to the day that he formally declared the end of the U.S. combat mission.

Obama's visit Friday to the vast Fort Bliss Army post in El Paso underscores a point Obama has made repeatedly on the campaign trail: He made a promise to end the unpopular Iraq war and kept it. Obama also visited Fort Bliss on Aug. 31, 2010, the day he announced the end of the U.S. combat role.

The White House says the visit is official business ? not campaign-related, although the distinction is not always clear. Obama will speak to troops and have a round-table discussion with service members and military families, the White House said.

Obama returns to the campaign trail on Saturday with appearances in Iowa.

White House Press Secretary Jay Carney said the visit to Fort Bliss will highlight administration efforts to support U.S. service members and their families, both in Iraq and Afghanistan. Those efforts include attempts to combat what Carney called "unseen wounds" of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars, including post-traumatic stress disorder and traumatic brain injury.

Fort Bliss soldiers participated in the Iraqi invasion in 2003 and were among the last to serve in combat roles there. The post endured significant losses during the Iraq war.

Carney told reporters Thursday that the visit was about more than politics. He called Obama's record on defense issues substantive and said the president had a "profound commitment" to end the war in Iraq and bring U.S. troops home.

"Part of ending the war in Iraq responsibly is standing by those who served," Carney said.

Veterans are a key voting bloc in the closely fought presidential race.

A Gallup tracking poll in August shows Republican Mitt Romney leads Obama, 55 percent to 38 percent among veterans. Exit polls conducted in 2008 showed voters who had served in the military preferred Republican John McCain over Obama by 10 percentage points.

At their party's convention this week in Tampa, Fla., Romney and other Republicans made repeated references to veterans. Romney broke away from the convention Wednesday to speak to the American Legion in Indianapolis.

Mindful of his poll numbers, Obama has sharply contrasted his record on Iraq and Afghanistan with Romney's rhetoric.

Campaigning in Virginia on Wednesday, Obama cited Romney's comment that ending the war in Iraq was "tragic."

His Republican rival "doesn't have a plan to bring home the 33,000 troops who will be coming home from Afghanistan next month," Obama said. "He likes to talk tough, but he doesn't have a lot of details when it comes to these critical issues. "

By contrast, Obama said ? repeating a familiar theme ? "When I say I will end the war in Iraq, I will end it. When I say that we will go after (Osama) bin Laden, we'll go after him."

As long as he is commander in chief, Obama added, "we will serve our veterans as well as they've served us. I mean it."

India uses death penalty: 5 other places where it's legal but rare

The decision of India?s Supreme Court today to uphold the death sentence for Mohammad Ajmal Amir Qasab, the last surviving gunman of the 2008 attacks on Mumbai, has reignited the debate in that country over capital punishment. ?India is just one of several countries where the death penalty remains a legal possibility but a practical rarity. ?Here are several others:

- Arthur Bright,?Staff writer

1. India

Death sentences are relatively common in India. While the 1980 case of Bachan Singh v. State of Punjab laid out a judicial proscription against capital punishment except in the ?rarest of the rare cases,? judges have still handed out at least 50 such sentences every year over the past five years, including highs of 100-plus in both 2010 and 2011.
But despite having so many convicts on death row, executions are rare in India. ?According to the BBC, there have only been two executions in the past 12 years, and most convicts can expect to see their death sentences commuted to life in prison. ?
And now, growing doubts about the death penalty?s deterrent effect and fair application are fueling sentiment in favor of abolishing the death penalty entirely. ?In an interview with the Times of India published Aug. 29, former Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court AP Shah said that
?India should join [other abolitionist] nations as there is enough reason to believe that the legal safeguard

Israel orders confiscation of Bethlehem village fields

BETHLEHEM (Ma'an) -- Israeli authorities have ordered the confiscation of agricultural land in a village near Bethlehem, residents said.

Land-owners from Nahalin village headed to the fields on Thursday, and found confiscation orders for 12 dunams, saying the land is considered Israeli state property.

The land is near Israeli settlement Beitar Illit.

Village council chief Osama Shakarneh told Ma'an the land is planted with grapes, almonds and olives, and villagers have land ownership documents for the area.

The council has appealed to the Palestinian Authority to halt the confiscation, he added.

PFT: Could players strike over NFL refs lockout?

Super Bowl XLVIGetty Images

The talk regarding the lockout of the officials continues.? It?s still unknown whether the NFLPA will take action.

But the NFLPA hasn?t ruled out doing so.

NFLPA executive director DeMaurice Smith, in an extensive interview with SI.com, was asked about the possibility that players will withhold services due to concerns regarding safety risks associated with the replacement officials.

?In America it is the employer?s obligation to provide as safe a working environment as possible,? Smith told Jim Trotter of SI.com.? ?We believe that if the National Football League fails in that obligation we reserve the right to seek any relief that we believe is appropriate.? The NFL has chosen to prevent the very officials that they have trained, championed and cultivated for decades to be on the field to protect players and ? by their own admission ? further our goal of enhanced safety.? That is absurd on its face.?

To some, the possibility of a player strike may seem absurd on its face.? We explained last month that it could happen, despite the presence of a no strike/no lockout provision in the CBA.? Still, if the players wouldn?t risk a paycheck in order to get a better overall deal with the owners in 2011, they won?t risk paychecks over safety concerns that, based on their chronic resistance to rules changes and fines/suspensions levied by the league office, don?t concern them.

Still, the NFLPA can do other things, from making the case for the lockout to end to filing a grievance or other legal action aimed at forcing the league to allow the locked-out officials to return to work.? It sounds like something tangible could be coming.

?We?ve been very public in saying that we believe on a scale of 1-10 the use of replacement referees in the preseason is a 12,? Smith said.? ?That goes up to a 16 now that you?re entering into the regular season.?

Smith identified three ?fundamental facts that are inescapable? in support of his views:? ?One, the players and the league have made tremendous strides in trying to make the game safer over the last three years. The second fact is, at the players? urging, the National Football League last year gave the referees more power to spot and deal with a concussed or injured player. The third inescapable fact is, over the last 20 years the league has done everything to maintain an experienced referee corps.?

He pointed out that, typically, rookie officials are introduced only with a team of experienced officials., and that the locked-out officials have nearly 1,500 years of experience.? So why would the NFL use entire teams of rookie officials?? ?The only conclusion that I have,? Smith said, ?is that the league cares more about money than it does about the experience of the referees as a vehicle to increase player safety.?

Smith also called upon owners to be involved in the process.

?The owners have invested in the players, and each and every owner loves what keeps the National Football League unique among sports.? And it?s two things, on any given Sunday a team could win; and every game matters,? Smith said.? ?So my question to the owners is, because those two things are true, why would they ever want to leave the game in critical moments in the hands of referees that they ordinarily would never hire?? I mean, If these referees were so credible, how come they hadn?t hired them before the lockout??

We?ve disagreed with Smith at certain times in the past.? It?s very hard to disagree with him on this point.

Using new officials creates a risk of errors that will affect the outcomes of games.? With the margin between making the playoffs and not making the playoffs at times razor thin and with recent history showing us that any team that gets in to the postseason can run the table, a bad, game-altering call in Week One could, in a roundabout way, have an effect on the outcome of the season.

The two sides simply don?t seem to be far enough apart to justify that risk.? The problem is that there?s no one who can clunk the parties? heads together, Moe Howard-style, and force them to find a middle ground.

Until that happens, the two sides will continue to line up like the boys and the girls on opposite walls at the junior high dance, waiting for each other to make the first move.

Hot spots pinpointed as earthquake trigger points: Small droplets of friction-generated melts can lead to 'megaquakes'

ScienceDaily (Aug. 29, 2012) ? Scientists at Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC San Diego have come a step closer to deciphering some of the basic mysteries and mechanisms behind earthquakes and how average-sized earthquakes may evolve into massive earthquakes.

In a paper published in the Aug. 30 issue of the journal Nature, Scripps scientists Kevin Brown and Yuri Fialko describe new information gleaned from laboratory experiments mimicking earthquake processes. The researchers discovered how fault zones weaken in select locations shortly after a fault reaches an earthquake tipping point.

They coined such locations as "melt welts" and describe the mechanism akin to an ice skater's blade reducing friction by melting the ice surface. The mechanism may be similar to "hot spots" known in automobile brake-clutch components.

"Melt welts appear to be working as part of a complicated feedback mechanism where complex dynamic weakening processes become further concentrated into initially highly stressed regions of a fault," said Brown, first author of the study and a professor in the Geosciences Research Division at Scripps. "The process allows highly stressed areas to rapidly break down, acting like the weakest links in the chain. Even initially stable regions of a fault can experience runaway slip by this process if they are pushed at velocities above a key tipping point."

"This adds to the fundamental understanding of the earthquake process because it really addresses the question of how these ruptures become energetic and dynamic and run away for long distances," said Fialko, a paper coauthor and a professor in the Cecil H. and Ida M. Green Institute of Geophysics and Planetary Physics at Scripps.

The study's results, supported by funding from the National Science Foundation, appear to help answer a longstanding paradox in seismology. Key fault zones such as the San Andreas Fault produce far too little heat from friction compared with the size and magnitude of the earthquakes they produce. Laboratory experiments show that thermal energy normally released by friction during slip can become rapidly reduced, potentially helping to account for a "low heat flow paradox." The melt welts also may help explain certain questions in earthquake rupture dynamics such as why some slowly slipping tremor-generating events can snowball into massive earthquakes if they pass a velocity tipping point.

"This may be relevant for how you get from large earthquakes to giant earthquakes," said Brown, who used the example of last year's magnitude 9.0 earthquake off Japan. "We thought that large patches of the fault were just creeping along at a constant rate, then all of a sudden they were activated and slipped to produce a mega earthquake that produced a giant tsunami."

Fialko says the melt welt finding could eventually lead to improved "shake" maps of ground-shaking intensities, as well as improvements in structural engineering plans. Future studies include investigations about why the melt welt weakening occurs and if it applies to most or all common fault zone materials, as well as field research to locate melt welts along fault zones.

The Scripps Marine Science Development Center provided the machinery used in the study's experiments.

Sporting KC loses Bunbury for season to hurt knee

By DAVE SKRETTA

AP Sports Writer

Associated Press Sports

updated 5:46 p.m. ET Aug. 27, 2012

KANSAS CITY, Kan. (AP) - Sporting Kansas City will have to chase an Eastern Conference championship without forward Teal Bunbury, who will miss the remainder of the season after tearing ligaments in his left knee during a draw with the New York Red Bulls.

The team announced the extent of the injury Monday, one day after Bunbury was hurt while leaping to make a pass to Kei Kamara for Sporting KC's only goal of the game. Bunbury crashed to the turf and held his knee, but played several more minutes before he was substituted out.

The team initially called the injury a sprain, but coach Peter Vermes said that Bunbury would undergo an MRI exam on Monday. That's when the extent of the injury was revealed.

Bunbury tore the ACL and damaged the LCL in his knee. Orthopedic surgeon Dr. Scott Luallin is scheduled to perform surgery on Friday, and Bunbury is expected to miss six to eight months.

"The injury is extremely unfortunate, but Teal has a great attitude and he will be back stronger than ever," Vermes said in a statement issued by the team.

Bunbury is a big reason why Sporting KC (14-7-5) leads the East by two points over the Red Bulls with eight games remaining in the regular season.

The former fourth overall draft pick is tied with C.J. Sapong for second on the team with five goals, and he also has one assist in 22 regular season games. He trails only Kamara, the team's leading scorer, and Graham Zusi for the most shots on goal.

Bunbury led Sporting KC with 11 goals in MLS competition last season.

The knee injury will also rule Bunbury out of potential international duty. He debuted for the U.S. men's national team in November 2010, and has played several games since, assisting on Zusi's winning goal in a game against Panama in January.

The U.S. resumes World Cup qualifying at Jamaica on Sept. 7, and is scheduled to play at Sporting KC's Livestrong Sporting Park against Guatemala on Oct. 16.

Apple

This is what the iPod Nano looks like now.

Apple may be considering yet another refresh to the iPod Nano this year that adds a Wi-Fi antenna to the device and the ability to download music directly from iTunes, according to a report on the Japanese blog Macotakara.

A Wi-Fi antenna would also allow users to take advantage of iTunes Match, Apple's cloud-based music service, on the iPod Nano.

Macotakara reported last month that the iPod Nano may also have a new, taller design than the current model.

Gov. McDonnell: Obama, Democrats focusing on abortion to distract from ?failed? record

TAMPA, Fla. ? Virginia Republican Gov. Bob McDonnell told The Daily Caller he thinks President Barack Obama?s re-election campaign is trying to use things like the recent national focus on abortion issues to distract from his ?failed? record as president.

?If you?ve got a horrible record on jobs and the economy and on debt and deficit, and you have no energy plan, then of course, you?re going to change the subject,? McDonnell said in a phone interview. ?That?s why you see so much attention from the Obama campaign on Romney?s tax returns, on Bain Capital, on social issues. It?s a very small-ball campaign ? a campaign of division and fear ? very different than the hope and change that you saw four years ago, which was uplifting and positive.?

?It?s because, if the election gets to be solely about jobs and the economy, debt, deficit and energy, Obama loses big because he has not produced on those policies,? he continued. ?He?s failed and everybody knows it. He?s trying to make it about personality and small-ball issues.?

Social issues ? especially abortion ? have peaked as an issue in the national political discourse in the last week after Missouri Republican Rep. Todd Akin, the state?s GOP candidate for U.S. Senate, used the phrase ?legitimate rape? when arguing against abortion on local television.

The Obama campaign sent out a fundraising appeal from Democratic strategist Donna Brazile Monday seeking to tie Akin to Republican candidate Mitt Romney.

McDonnell said this election isn?t about those social issues ? it?s really about the economy ? even though Democrats, he said, will use that type of thing to distract voters.

?The top line issue is which candidate has got the best ideas to get the greatest country on earth out of debt and back to work,? McDonnell said. ?That?s what this campaign is all about. And, it?s the vision and plans of Mitt Romney versus the record of Barack Obama.?

?No matter how you slice the cake or how you wordsmith it on the left, when you look at 42 months in a row with over 8 percent unemployment rate, 23 million Americans either unemployed or underemployed, and you look at a $16 trillion debt ? the highest in American history ? and that this president has added $5 trillion to ? that is just an indefensible record,? the Virginia governor charged. ?The president has tried his policies, and they haven?t worked. It?s time for a change, and Mitt Romney is that change.?

McDonnell, the chairman of the national Republican Governors Association, also told TheDC he thinks GOP governors? nationwide will play a ?huge? role in the upcoming election.

?That?s going to be part of my speech [at the Republican National Convention] tomorrow night,? he said. ?That is, Republican governors are doing something different than Democratic governors. We?re getting results on debt, on jobs, on energy ? and doing much better than Democratic governors. So, if you like what we?re doing now, then you?ll really like what Mitt Romney will do in the White House. He?s a former governor, he?s all about balancing budgets without raising taxes and creating jobs. He?s done it in the public and private sector. And, he?s not going to make excuses and blame other people. Governors can?t do that. The buck stops at your desk. That?s why he?ll be a much more effective leader than President Obama.?

McDonnell said one ?very good case study? of how liberal policies don?t work and how conservative ones do is the dichotomy between his state and Democratic Gov. Martin O?Malley?s Maryland.

?We?re at a 5.9 percent unemployment rate [in Virginia],? McDonnell said. ?Maryland is at 7 [percent unemployment]. They?re having to increase taxes, and increasing gambling, they?re doing all kinds of things to feed the spending machine. We?ve been reforming government and cutting spending and so we?ve had $1.4 billion in surpluses over the past three years. It?s a good contrast, and I think it?s a good contrast for what the differences are in an Obama White House versus a Romney White House.?

Above all, though, McDonnell said ?the bottom line is: fiscal conservative principles work.?

?At the end of the day, that?s what this election is about,? McDonnell added. ?It?s not about personalities, it?s not about who you like the best. It?s about results. Right now, we?ve got a lot of rhetoric in D.C. but no real action. Mitt Romney?s a business guy and he?s all about getting results ? and that?s what we need right now.?

McDonnell also expects Romney to win in his Virginia ? a major swing state in this election.

?He?s making great progress [in Virginia],? McDonnell said of Romney. ?We were down 8 points just about four or five months ago. Now, it?s a dead heat. Actually, a poll or two had him [Romney] up by one. The trend is very good, the enthusiasm gap is on the Republican side unlike four years ago when it was on the Democrats? side. We?ve got the best grassroots effort that I?ve seen in 21 years in office in terms of the number of phone calls, door-knocks, offices. I think if these trends continue, we?ll win Virginia.?

Will Apple's smaller tablet be called the 'iPad Mini'?

7 hrs.

iPad Mini? iPad Nano? iPad Air??We don't actually know if Apple is even working on a smaller iPad. All we have to go on are?reports from anonymous sources and leaked parts?which are?allegedly?intended for this tablet. But that won't stop rumors about the devices's name from floating around.

CNET's Lance Whitney points out?that?the folks at Japanese blog Macotakara?? who've had a mixed track record when it comes to Apple rumors???say they've got a source who claims that the rumored tablet will be called?the "iPad Mini."

Apple blogger John Gruber has previously dubbed the device the "iPad Air" in passing, while suggesting that it will be announced in October, instead of sharing the spotlight with the next-generation iPhone in September.

"I don?t think Apple would want reviews of both a new iPhone and new-size iPad appearing at the same time," Gruber?writes. "The iPhone is too big, too cool, and garners too much attention ? and it?s in Apple?s interest to keep that attention undiluted."?

AllThingsD's John Paczkowski went with the label "so-called 'iPad Mini'" while explaining that he has "several sources" who confirm that Apple will indeed show off the device in October.?

For what it's worth, we frequently reach out to the folks at Apple and ask them if they're feeling crazy enough to?chit-chat about their upcoming products, but as it's their policy not to address such rumors, we'll have to?keep speculating until Apple sends out invitations to a very special event.?

Remembering The Late Tony Scott, Director Of 'Top Gun,' 'True ...

Tony Scott

We at Geeks of Doom and everyone around the cinema community and the globe are still stunned by the news last week that film director Tony Scott, responsible for so many of the fun, in your face action films of the 1980s and beyond, jumped to his death off of a bridge at the age of 68.

Certainly this is a story that no one anticipated coming, and for sure there will be question marks that will go unanswered forever. Why this vibrant, talented, vivid, energetic and colorful individual would commit such an act is harrowing, tragic, and ultimately extremely sad (there is speculation about this health, but no official word yet). Klieg lights have been snuffed in Hollywood metaphorically from this event, and the legacy of Tony Scott will always endure and hopefully shine even brighter than it did when he was with us.

In memoriam of the man, it?s very, very easy to be forgiving and forgetful when an artist like Scott passes away, and in the quick emotional haze of these kind of events, it?s very easy to suddenly give the deceased artist a free pass of his entire body of work. But, in all fairness and honesty, and that?s the only way this reporter can give it to you folks, there?s no denying that the body of cinematic work that Tony Scott produced in his lifetime were equally loved, hated, critically panned, enjoyed by movie goers and critics, they sported huge box office returns, they sported huge box office failures, this kind of list can go on and on.

It also must be noted that Scott had sometimes existed in the shadow of his older brother Ridley, who while he may not have ever directed the kind of blockbusters that younger Scott had sometimes the propensity to do so, Ridley had gone on to direct some of the most critically lauded films in recent memory. Tony was like the more looser of the two, the McCartney to Ridley?s Lennon, and thus, the result of Tony Scott?s output of work was more fun, looser, required one to think less, enjoy more, feel more primal and delight more aurally and visually at his output. Tony Scott?s directorial style was a hammer, in your face attack of the senses at once, sometimes there was no room to breathe, with characterizations that some might regard as hollow, spouting fun lines while mired in superlative clich?s, but make no mistake, Tony Scott always, ALWAYS, threw a fun cinematic party for his audience. And if you went along with that ride, a fun time would indeed be had by all.

So here?s a breakdown of some of the highlights (and to some, possibly the lowlights) of Tony Scott?s career (in chronological order):

The Hunger

1) The Hunger (1983): Scott?s debut made some controversial noise when first released, and it?s pretty much a fun vampire yarn about as far and adult from anything Stephanie Hardwicke could ever muster up. Susan Sarandon is embroiled in a love triangle with blood thirsty creatures of the night David Bowie and Catherine Deneuve. Full of the Scott style right away, counterpointed by bizarre twists and turns at every clip, and a controversial lesbian sequence between the two female leads that drew more attention during its original release than the film itself did. It will now of course remain a curio as Scott?s first venture into filmmaking.

Top Gun

2) Top Gun (1986): The film that propelled Tom Cruise higher than the aerodynamic aircraft he flew, and made Paramount an absolute fortune. The film became a sort of benchmark for the 1980s itself, bombastic, loud, hyper edited, screaming action alongside ear splitting music accompaniment. Top Gun is almost the archetype of the 1980s and spawned a sort of palette for this kind of action film which still exists in full frontal force today as a blueprint for today?s over the top indulgent films. That said, it remains a stepping stone for a lot of fans who grew up with this picture, it was a huge pop cultural patchwork of sights and sounds for the young 80s generation who experienced it originally and most importantly, it put Tony Scott on the map as an extremely bankable film director and someone who could be trusted to put together the kind of production that studios clamored for during this Reagan era of the 1980s, and ever more so today. Scott would go to try and strike twice while the iron was hot with Cruise, in Days of Thunder, which pretty much this time kept Tom Cruise on the ground as a race car driver, but still retaining the kind of Top Gun verve, a few years after this film.

The Last Boy Scout

3) The Last Boy Scout (1991): A fun popcorn film raised to the highest art, this one finds Bruce Willis and Damon Wayans working together in tandem (although arguably not like the Lethal Weapon of the ink is black the page is white pairings) to solve a murder. Full of fun cynical dialogue which is endlessly quotable by the generation that grew up with it, smart, full of the glossy sheen that became Scott?s style, which is not a bad thing at all for this picture, it saved Bruce Willis? career in some ways during this time (the actor had just come off of the atrocious Hudson Hawk) and did make a profit and especially had a great life in home video. Willis and Wayans chew the scenery like bubble gum all over this one.

True Romance

4) True Romance (1993): THIS is the magnum opus in the Scott resume in my opinion. Scott was pegged (as a lot of directors were at that time) to develop a script that had been written by Quentin Tarantino, who had just become Hollywood?s newest wunkerkind after his success with Reservoir Dogs. Scott finally had an opportunity to develop material that was quirky, dialogue driven, violent in a more realistic sense, and full of surreal and wild imagery. He proved himself worthy of the task. Lovebirds Christian Slater and Patricia Arquette become more and more deeper involved in a lovers-on?the-lam kind of narrative that is elevated by the always punchy Tarantino script and the ham fisted, extremely macho and confident direction by Scott, who in a way is almost channeling Sam Peckinpah here. An ensemble cast rounds out the action, and what?s most pleasing is seeing one Dennis Hopper, who made his career on playing off-kilter, out-there characters, as one of the more subdued normal people in the film! If you?ve never seen any of Scott?s work, this is the essential one.

Crimson Tide

5) Crimson Tide (1995): Pairing again with the producer duo of Jerry Bruckheimer and the late Don Simpson, responsible for Top Gun, Scott finds himself submerged in the throes of a submarine in this outing. U.S. vs Russia power plays are afoot, as well as the ones between Gene Hackman and Denzel Washington, as Commander and Lieutenant respectively. Once again, the pumped up, Top Gun style soundtrack and schematic applies, and once again it?s a pretty obvious B-movie story when you break it all down, but also once again, the style of Tony Scott elevates this to a fist in the air white knuckler of an action film; he knows how to draw performances out of his actors (the leads especially) that take this from what could have been a straight-to-video pathetic mess of celluloid to another great, leave your brain at the door but that?s the point, smart production.

There are plenty of other films, some favorites I may have forgotten, Beverly Hills Cop 2, The Enemy of the State, The Fan, Man on Fire, Domino, the remake of Joseph Sargent?s 1974 crackerjack masterpiece The Taking of Pelham 1, 2, 3 which also starred Denzel Washington and what stands now as final production, another train out of control film, 2010?s Unstoppable, yet again with Washington and Star Trek?s Chris Pine. All of these films, like the ones singled out, had that knack and veracity of having the Tony Scott stamp affixed firmly in every single frame, frames of films that pump one up, get the circulation going, and then keeps it going, an absolute cornucopia of sights and sounds to ones nervous and circulatory system.

One is encouraged to revisit or visit for the first time some of these films. It is not farfetched or wrong to say that these films are not for everyone. They will never be for everyone. And that?s not also to say that the fans of Tony Scott productions were those that maybe didn?t know better, or maybe knew something that others didn?t. It all depends on taste and how one looks at the works of Tony Scott. But one thing can remain crystal clear, Tony Scott showed everyone how to have a good time at the cinema, employed the apex of the term escapism for his audience, fooled and tooled around with their sights and senses, and had them leaving for the exits when it was all done, amazed, enraptured, and delighted if anything else. And how is that a bad thing? When all is said and done, movies are ENTERTAINMENT, whatever filmmakers and artists do within their frames, whatever is put into narratives, whatever we learn or are taught or whatever films are trying to convey to us, about a sundry amount of topics from the pedestrian to the absolutely essential important parts of our lives, movies are ENTERTAINMENT first and foremost. And nobody in a way arguably understood that concept more than Tony Scott. In a world that seems to be getting crazier and more intense to live in these days as the world revolves forward and forward, we need a Tony Scott more than ever today. RIP Tony.

'Victim 1' sues Penn State over Sandusky crimes

HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) ? The young man whose 2009 allegations of sexual abuse led to the Penn State scandal and criminal convictions of former assistant coach Jerry Sandusky is asking a court to find the university also at fault.

A lawsuit, filed Friday by the person known as Victim 1 at Sandusky's trial, said university officials made deliberate decisions not to report Sandusky to authorities.

It described their actions as "a function of (Penn State's) purposeful, deliberate and shameful subordination of the safety of children to its economic self-interests, and to its interest in maintaining and perpetuating its reputation."

The complaint was filed electronically in Philadelphia state court, Slade McLaughlin, a lawyer for Victim 1, told The Associated Press. The suit names no other defendants than the State College university.

Sandusky was convicted in June of 45 criminal counts for sexual abuse of 10 boys, both on and off campus. At 68, he awaits sentencing that will likely send him to prison for the rest of his life.

Victim 1 and his mother reported Sandusky to the boy's high school and the Clinton County child protective agency in November 2009. Their complaint triggered the state investigation that last year resulted in the criminal charges against Sandusky and two university officials.

Former Penn State administrator Gary Schultz and athletic director Tim Curley, who is on leave, were charged with perjury and failure to report suspected child abuse. Both deny the allegations and are expected to go on trial in January.

Famed football coach Joe Paterno was fired. He died last January.

In the lawsuit, Victim 1 is known as "John Doe C." The suit draws heavily from court testimony, grand jury investigations and Penn State's own investigative report, conducted by former FBI director Louis Freeh. The report details how university officials handled the claims against Sandusky and Sandusky's behavior.

University spokesman Dave La Torre said the school has no comment on the pending litigation.

"The university takes these cases very seriously," La Torre said adding that the current president and board "have publicly emphasized that their goal is to find solutions that rest on the principle of justice for the victims."

The suit claimed that a "special relationship" between Penn State and The Second Mile, a Sandusky-founded charity for youth, gave Sandusky a respectable public image and connections that enabled him to perform criminal acts.

It alleged "(Penn State) believed its reputation and economic interests would be adversely impacted if the public learned that a man closely associated with the school's football program was, in fact, a pedophile."

The Second Mile's future remains uncertain, subject to a legal dispute.

According to the lawsuit, Victim 1 met Sandusky about eight years ago, when the boy was 11 and a first-year participant in a camp sponsored by The Second Mile. In his second year, the boy drew Sandusky's attention and accepted invitations to spend nights at the coach's State College home and to attend professional sports events, the suit said.

Over a three-year period ending in 2008, the suit said, Sandusky assaulted the boy more than 100 times, including fondling and oral sex. The lawsuit claims Sandusky attacked "numerous victims over a span of 30 years," but noted that his criminal trial was limited to a 15-year period and 10 victims.

Following Victim 1's testimony, Sandusky was convicted of all six counts that related to him, including involuntary deviate sexual intercourse for instances of oral sex.

The suit alleged negligence, fraudulent concealment, intentional infliction of emotional distress and civil conspiracy. It said Victim 1 has suffered physical and emotional injuries and will likely need medical and psychological help well into his future. The suit seeks compensatory and punitive damages.

Another Sandusky accuser has filed a federal lawsuit related to the scandal and a second victim has filed a court notice that he will file complaint. Lawyers have suggested others may take legal action.

Daraya, Syria Violence: More Than 200 Dead In Suburb Outside Damascus, Activists Say

* Reports of more than 200 dead in Daraya
* State news agency says army cleansed town of terrorists
* Vice-president, rumoured defected, appears in Damascus
* Syria to dominate summit hosted in Tehran
By Khaled Yacoub Oweis
AMMAN, Aug 26 (Reuters) - Syrian opposition activists accused President Bashar al-Assad's army on Sunday of massacring scores of people in a town close to the capital that it recently recaptured from rebels.
More than 200 bodies, some of them women and children, were found in houses and basements around Daraya, according to activists who said most had been killed "execution-style" by troops during house-to-house raids.
Due to restrictions on non-state media in Syria, it was impossible to independently verify the accounts.
"Assad's army has committed a massacre in Daraya," said Abu Kinan, an activist in the town, using an alias to protect himself from reprisals.
The killings in Daraya, a working class Sunni Muslim town that sustained three days of heavy bombardment before being overrun by the army on Friday, raised the daily death toll to 440 people on Saturday, one of the highest since the uprising started in March last year, the Local Coordination Committees, an activist network, said.
Video footage from activists showed numerous bodies of young men side-by-side at the Abu Suleiman al-Darani mosque in Daraya, many with what looked like gunshot wounds to the head and chest.
"A massacre," said the voice of the man who appeared to be taking the footage. "You are seeing the revenge of Assad's forces ... more than 150 bodies on the floor of this mosque."
The official state news agency said: "Our heroic armed forces cleansed Daraya from remnants of armed terrorist groups who committed crimes against the sons of the town and scared them and sabotaged and destroyed public and private property."
U.N. investigators said in a report this month that both sides in the conflict had performed summary executions - a war crime - but that Assad's troops and militia loyal to the president had committed many more offences than the rebels.
The report said forces loyal to Assad committed a massacre of more than 100 civilians in the town of Houla in May that the government blamed on Islamist "terrorists".
The United Nations estimates that more than 18,000 people have been killed in the conflict that pits a mainly Sunni opposition against a ruling system dominated by the Assad family - members of the Alawite faith, an offshoot of Shi'ite Islam - for the last four decades.

VICE-PRESIDENT NOT DEFECTED
As well as the bloodshed in Damascus and surrounding cities, many were killed in Syria's biggest city Aleppo where rebel-held areas came under heavy bombardment.
State television reported clashes between the army and "terrorists" in a central neighbourhood of Aleppo next to the historic Old City and less than 1 km (1,000 yards) away from its ancient citadel.
The Free Hauran Assembly activists' group said a brigadier named Mohammad Hassan al-Haj had defected to Jordan, the latest Sunni officer to desert.
But earlier reports that Vice-President Farouq al-Sharaa had defected were shown to be wrong when he appeared in public for the first time in weeks, meeting Iranian officials, state news agency SANA reported.
Iran, the Middle East's main Shi'ite power which is a close ally of Assad, accuses its adversaries in the West and the Arab world of fuelling the conflict by backing the opposition.
"Fortunately today important countries such as Russia, China and the Islamic Republic of Iran ... are completely opposed to imposed policies on Syria and foreign interference," said Alaeddin Boroujerdi, a senior member of Iran's parliament visiting Damascus, Fars news agency reported.
Tehran, defying efforts by the West to isolate it over its nuclear activities opened a summit of developing nations on Sunday where Syria may prove a divisive topic.
The head of the Arab League said both sides of the conflict should stop fighting and start talking.
"Those who wait to achieve a victory in the ongoing conflict in Syria are putting Syria in a big war," Nabil Elaraby told a news conference in Cairo.
"We hope that the sound of reason prevails and that both sides accept mediation efforts."
With Russia leading resistance to Western and Arab pressure for action against Assad, the United Nations Security Council remains deadlocked.
A new U.N. envoy, Algerian diplomat Lakhdar Brahimi, has said he is "humbled and scared" at the task of seeking a peaceful solution to the Syrian crisis.

Outsourcing Customer Service | Frederic Siegel Business

Quite a few organizations hire employees in internal positions such as human resources, promoting, sales, facilities, cafeteria, accounting or security without adequate training in customer service skills. Usually, unless a client complains or compliments an employee their supervisor usually assumes that everything is being done well and provides positive feedback on their performance review.
Customer Services includes tiny and giant details such as understanding the needs and purchasing habits of the customers, responding to any or all e-mail and phone inquiries, human contact and conversation, taking responsibility, to celebrate little triumphs with them, commiserate in their complaints and even get to understand them. These customers once made can stay loyal customers forever.
By itself client service is too vast to handle unless you?re a massive business with well outlined sections in your office. Outsourcing client service will allow a small or medium business to take care of its core competencies, while the shoppers are professionally and satisfactorily dealt with.
On-line client service is handled by quite a bit of decision centers. The requirement for such service arises on 2 accounts. First an on-line business may be a twenty four*7 business. Your customers belong to the planet and there are several time zones out there! Their hours and holidays are different from yours. Keep in mind you lose a customer to your competitor if you are doing not respond to their calls. Secondly, call response desires training and expertise handling. You cannot personally attend every call. Thus you need to rent employees. Every employee will want to be trained in your product, their handling and customer responses. So you?ll would like to setup an entire process. The complete procedure is terribly time centric. If time is at premium (as it is for many folks) outsource it to the experts. Decision center staff are trained in such procedures, responses come easier to them and they are trained to present a person?s face to the prospect.
Outsourcing customer service might have its pitfalls if the call center and business do not work closely in tandem with every other. The outsourcing company ought to work with the decision center hand in hand to get customer feedback. The script flow must be based on previous expertise of the company. The concept of non-public attention to the client is very vital for closing a call. There some tips to be followed for ideal client service assistance. A number of them are mentioned here.
The client should be put 1st as a person. The customer ought to be helped to form a call and not pushed to buy. Respect him and he can respect you in flip and come back to you.

South Africa mourning upended by fiery politician

MARIKANA, South Africa (AP) ? A fiery politician cast out of the ruling party Thursday hijacked the main memorial service for 34 striking miners killed by police, to accuse President Jacob Zuma's government of complicity in the shootings. Angry government ministers walked out.

Zuma did not attend any of the services. He called a news conference to announce a retired supreme court judge will head a judicial commission of inquiry to investigate "the facts and circumstances which gave rise to the use of force and whether this was reasonable and justifiable in the particular circumstances."

He announced a wide range of issues for the commission to investigate, including the role of London-registered Lonmin PLC, which owns the platinum mine where the violence was sparked by union rivalry.

The commission would look at Lonmin's conduct and report "whether the company, by act or omission, created an environment which was conducive to the creation of tension, labour unrest, disunity among its employees or other harmful conduct," Zuma said.

The somber and grieving tone of the memorial service at the mine was shattered by Julius Malema, who was expelled in April for sowing disunity in the African National Congress. Malema was applauded when he said the government has not intervened in the mines "because our leaders are involved in these mines." He said that President Zuma's foundation and other ANC leaders have shares in the mines.

"Our government has become a pig that is eating its children," charged Malema.

Malema's outburst came after church leaders had urged people not to use the memorial service to score political points.

About a dozen Cabinet ministers left before they could address the crowd of more than 1,000 at the mine at Marikana, 70 kilometers (40 miles) northwest of Johannesburg.

Last week's shootings were the worst display of state violence since apartheid ended in 1994 and have thrown the spotlight on growing anger at South Africa's massive inequality, poverty and unemployment.

The violence unfolded as some 3,000 rock drill operators demanded a minimum wage of 12,500 rand ($1,560). The poorest 10 percent of the population shares 1.1 billion rand ($137.5 million) while the country's richest 10 percent has 381 billion (nearly $48 billion), the Congress of South African Trade Unions noted Thursday.

In a statement it claimed Lonmin's financial officer is paid 152 times as much as a rock drill operator at the mine. It claimed the operators earn only 5,600 rand ($700) though researchers who work with miners say they make at least 10,000 rand ($1,250).

The relative of a miner killed in last week's shootings said he wants to see some arrests.

"If it were me I'd want everyone who was involved in this incident including the mine managers to be arrested, the whole lot of them, because a person's life is not worth money," Ubuntu Akumelisine told the AP.

Mungiswa Mphumza, the sister of a dead miner from Eastern Cape, said she was at peace.

"We have accepted everything that has happened and we ask that the dead rest in peace, there is nothing that we can do at the moment, what has happened has happened. God takes what he likes," Mphumza said.

Roger Phillimore, chairman of Lonmin PLC mine company, also offered condolences to the the mourners.

"It is with huge sadness that I join with you to mourn the loss of so many of our colleagues. It is unquestionably the saddest loss in the history of this company," Philimore said.

This was the first time since the shooting that a high-ranking Lonmin official addressed the miners and their community.

Zuma had decreed a week of national mourning to honor all victims of violence in South Africa, which has which has one of the world's highest murder and rape rates.

In the past week, three orphan children were stoned to death, with a 12-year-old girl among them raped, and a pastor is on trial for allegedly raping and molesting nine children in his wife's nursery school.

At the mine, strikers who captured two police officers hacked them to death with machetes. Strikers also set ablaze a car carrying two mine security guards, burning them alive.

Another six people died in the week before police fired volleys of gunfire at a group of charging miners, killing 34 and wounding 78.

"This ongoing violence is a part of our national and collective shame and we should take this time to seriously reflect on the state of our society," Prof. Yunus Ballim of Witwatersrand University said before students and lecturers marched in memory of victims of violence.

On Wednesday, Zuma demanded that mine companies provide decent homes and sanitation for miners. He singled out one mining house where 666 workers share four toilets and four showers, according to the Star newspaper. He did not name the company.

Zuma warned that those who do not comply with the Mining Charter requiring adequate housing risk losing their licenses.

Lonmin, the mine where the violence happened, remained shut down to honor the day of mourning.
