The Sexual Health Blog: Celebrating 40 years of Audacity

This year marks the 40th anniversary of our organization?s legacy of serving the Calgary community with comprehensive, non-judgmental sexual health information.?Although our organization?was officially registered on June 27, 1972, we are taking the opportunity to mark this milestone over the entire year ahead.

We began as a grassroots volunteer organization and have been providing comprehensive sexuality education and counselling to the Calgary community since 1972. In the early 70?s, our work focused on improving access to birth control and increasing support for women facing unplanned pregnancies. Since that time, we have evolved to include a range of services and programs to ensure that individuals are able to make informed, positive choices about their sexual and reproductive health.

We believe that healthy sexuality is more than the absence of disease or unintended pregnancies; it also encompasses the positive aspects of relationships and sexuality. Our programs and services for families, youth, adults and seniors reflect our awareness of the holistic nature of sexual health and its impact across the life span.

At the CSHC, we continue to ensure that women and men have access to comprehensive sexual health information.? Sexuality still remains a taboo subject for many, STI rates are rising, and Canadians continually need to actively defend and advocate for their reproductive rights.

We still have much work to do, and we know that we will continue to have the community?s support behind us.

We have had many supporters and advocates in our community in the past 40 years, and we hope to celebrate and acknowledge them this anniversary year.

5 Reasons Your Business Needs Retail Accounting Software ...

March 3rd, 2012

The speed of business is fast. Things change at the drop of a hat. Being able to take advantage of and adapt to these changes is what separates successful businesses from those that go out of business. One such tool that helps businesses keep pace with this ever changing world is retail accounting software. Retail companies typically have a wide variety of customers and a large number of transactions ? both debits and credits. For most businesses with more than just a few clients, keeping track of this information can be time consuming and mistakes can be made in the short run. That is where modern technology is helping businesses. Software is able to perform some accounting tasks in real time that once required a delay and a CPA to be done accurately. Here are the top 5 ways that retail accounting software can help your business:

* Improved Internal Controls ? It is easy for money to slip through the cracks, both through incompetence and unethical behavior. Finding and correcting these mistakes in a timely manner are near impossible without a team of accountants working around the clock. But with software, mistakes and outlying numbers that do not add up can be automated to raise red flags immediately ? when the errors are still easy to fix.

* Improved Profitability and Cash Flows ? Time is money. Mistakes cost money and time (which is more money). The quicker reliable information can be compiled and used, the greater advantage a business has against its competitors. The quicker and more accurately that cash can be attributed and located to the proper category, the greater flexibility and versatility that a business has with its capital.

* Elimination of Third Parties ? Most businesses have to use third party accounting in some way, shape, or form. Whether that relates to bookkeeping, auditing, or managerial consulting varies from business to business. These third parties have constant expenses. Software licenses typically are a one time (or annual) purchase.

* Administrative Reports ? The best managers operate on information. The reputation of a guy going with his gut makes for great anecdotes. But any manager who operates by the seat of his pants on a regular basis is not going to be a manager for very long. The best decision makers make the best decisions because they consistently have the best information that shows them which path is the best. Software provides the opportunity to compile custom reports in a quick and efficient manner, changing aspects on a whim. Reports from human accountants need to be specified out in advance and are restricted typically to the data asked for.

* Be Green ? Old school accounting processes are done on paper. Paper receipts are not only cluttery, but also bad for the environment. Do not scoff at this notion. Retail accounting by paper is only a minor environmental bane for a single business, but if one takes the retail industry as a whole ? that is a lot of a trees that died needless deaths. Accounting software removes this from the equation while providing the user with the advantages listed above. It is a win-win.

This Means War (2012)

Whether he deserves it or not, McG is one of those directors, like the similarly maligned Brett Ratner or Michael Bay, whose name has become short-hand for loud, crass, Hollywood action rubbish. With the Charlie?s Angels franchise and Terminator: Salvation to his name, it?s fair to say that McG has not earned our trust. However, an action-comedy starring Tom Hardy and Chris Pine seemed like it had the potential to be a fun movie.
Super spies FDR (Pine) and Tuck (Hardy) fall for the same girl: workaholic singleton Lauren (Reese Witherspoon). They use their spy skills to compete for her affection and to get inside her private life, as she wrestles with whether it?s ok to date two guys at the same time. This Means War is what you?d be afraid it would be. It?s crass, the characters are unappealing and it?s generally obnoxious. The fact that the film tries to wink at the fact that what the characters are doing is borderline sociopathic (they?re all lying to each other, FDR and Tuck snoop around her private life, they use video cameras to spy on her, they break into her house at one point) doesn?t make it funny, it makes it creepy and voyeuristic. This isn?t a dark comedy, this is a 12A.The three lead actors all seem to be going for it, giving it 100%, but they?re giving 100% to a truly awful script. Hardy gets the closest to making his character likeable but he?s hobbled by the script. Meanwhile Pine, who was excellent in Star Trek and the little-seen indie horror Carriers, is unable to break his character out of ?obnoxious jackass? as the lady-killer FDR, and Witherspoon is never convincingly interesting, funny, or appealing enough to make you believe they?d go so far. American TV star Chelsea Handler also appears as Witherspoon?s best friend who gets to deliver the standard foul-mouthed sexual advice, none of which is remotely funny. For an action romantic comedy it?s not funny (I didn?t smile until at least half an hour in), it?s definitely not romantic, and the action is by the numbers. The closest the film comes to getting a laugh is the paintball sequence, which might be funny if you haven?t seen Community. That aside, it?s one of the most aggravating films I?ve had to sit through in a while, and a waste of Hardy and Pine. Verdict: Avoid it. If you have to watch a Tom Hardy film, watch Warrior. Not enough people did.

Frozen mummy?s genetic blueprints unveiled

The 5,300-year-old Iceman had brown eyes, Lyme disease and modern-day Mediterranean relatives

Web edition : 2:45 pm

By peering deeply into the DNA of the mummy known as ?tzi, geneticists have expanded the rap sheet on the 5,300-year-old Iceman: He had brown eyes, brown hair and blood type O, was lactose intolerant and his modern-day relatives live on Corsica and Sardinia.

These vital statistics and more come from an analysis of the Tyrolean man?s complete genetic blueprints, reported online February 28 in Nature Communications. The DNA analysis also found that the Iceman, found frozen and well-preserved in the Alps in 1991, carried genetic risk factors for heart disease. And he was infected with the bacterium that causes Lyme disease, making him the oldest known case of the disease.

For the new study, researchers led by Albert Zink, an anthropologist at the European Academy of Bolzano in Italy, removed a bit of ?tzi?s hip bone and extracted DNA from the sample. The mummy?s fresh-frozen state helped preserve his DNA, making deciphering a complete of set genetic blueprints easier than for most ancient samples, says Niels Lynnerup, a forensic anthropologist at the University of Copenhagen. ?It is much better DNA than you can get from one dry old bone,? he says.

?tzi?s brown eyes and lactose intolerance are evidence that scientists are right about the pace of evolution of some human traits, says John Hawks, an anthropologist at the University of Wisconsin?Madison. Mutations that gave rise to blue eyes and the ability to digest dairy products into adulthood arose sometime within the past 10,000 years but took multiple generations to spread throughout Europe.

People living in ?tzi?s time ?had the dairy animals, but what they didn?t have was enough generations for the gene to become common,? Hawks says. The finding that the Iceman was lactose intolerant confirms that picture. ?We were right about this gene. It is new.?

Previous studies of ?tzi?s genetic past examined DNA only from cells? energy-making factories, called mitochondria. People inherit mitochondria from their mothers, so that genetic material can be used to trace a person?s maternal lineage. ?tzi?s mitochondria carry some genetic variants not seen in modern Europeans, leading scientists to think that his maternal line has died out.

In the new study, researchers examined all of the Iceman?s DNA, including his Y chromosome. Since Y chromosomes are passed from father to son, certain molecular signatures on the chromosome can help identify relatives from the father?s side of the family. ?tzi?s Y chromosome contains genetic variants that are rare in Europe today, and found mainly in people who live on the islands of Corsica and Sardinia.

That doesn?t mean that the Iceman isn?t related to present-day people from the southern Alps where he lived and died, Zink says. Scientists don?t have DNA samples from many people in the Tyrolean Alps with which to compare ?tzi?s DNA, leaving open the possibility that researchers may yet discover other modern-day relatives, he says.

?tzi is the first ancient person ever diagnosed with Lyme disease, an infection caused by the bacterium Borrelia burgdorferi. Researchers have known that the bacterium has infected animals for millions of years and thought that ancient humans probably contracted the illness as well.

?It has been a theory that it goes back many, many thousands of years, but we?ve not had proof before,? says Allen Steere, a physician and scientist at Harvard Medical School in Boston who first discovered and named Lyme disease. ?This is proof that it goes back at least 5,000 years, and probably a long time before that.?

It's been a long time coming, but Tyga has finally released his Young Money debut, Careless World: Rise of the Last King, and to celebrate, the L.A. spitter will visit "RapFix Live" on Wednesday (February 29).

It hasn't been an easy road for Tyga, who released his independent debut LP, No Introduction, in 2008, but after hooking up with Lil Wayne's YMCMB crew, he has amassed a series of wins. His biggest single, "Rack City," has already peaked at #3 on the Billboard Rap Songs chart and spawned a high-profile remix featuring T.I., Young Jeezy, Wale, Fabolous and Meek Mill.

While tracks like the Lil Wayne-assisted "Faded" and "King & Queens" featuring Wale and Nas have fans excited about the album, which was released February 21, there is still some controversy surrounding the release. It seems Tyga failed to clear a sample from Dr. Martin Luther King's "I Have a Dream" speech and the physical CD was pulled from major retail chains like Best Buy and Target. The snafu will no doubt put a dent in Tyga's first-week sales, but he is still projected to sell about 75,000 copies digitally.

Houston rapper Trae Tha Truth will also appear on this week's "RapFix Live" to make a special announcement. Emerging from the underground rap crew the Screwed Up Click, Trae has made quite a name for himself in the streets. With a number of solo albums, mixtapes and collaboration LPs like 2003's A--holes by Nature, with Z-Ro, Trae has become one of the most respected MCs in the game. His 2011 LP Street King featured contributions from Lil Wayne, Rick Ross, Wyclef Jean and Wiz Khalifa, to name a few. Now Trae is ready to take a new step in his career, but you have to tune in to "RapFix Live" on Wednesday to find out.

Finally, DJ Whoo Kid is set to hit the famous red couch with newly inked G-Unit Signee Paris. Fans may have heard the femcee spitting on 50 Cent's latest mixtape project, Big 10.

Catch Tyga, DJ Whoo Kid and Trae tha Truth on "RapFix Live" Wednesday at 4 p.m. ET on MTV.com, and be sure to join the Twitter conversation using the hashtags #RapFixLive. Send your questions for the artists to @MTVRapFiX!
