Eva Mendes Needs to Stare at Ryan Gosling's Face More

Let's be honest: We make a point of looking at Ryan Gosling as much as possible. Whether he's on the red carpet, the big screen or sitting right in front of us, it's easy to get lost staring at his handsome face. That's why we've noticed that Gosling's character in The Place Beyond The Pines has a dagger tattoo dripping a drop of blood right below his left eye.

Samsung Galaxy S 4 for Verizon swings through the FCC

Samsung Galaxy S 4 for Verizon swings through the FCC

We weren't kidding about that influx of FCC filings: the Verizon edition of Samsung's Galaxy S 4, the SCH-i545, has passed through the US regulator's approval right on cue. The device on display ticks all the checkboxes we'd expect, including LTE on both Verizon's main 700MHz band and the carrier's recently acquired AWS frequencies. We also notice HSPA-based 3G, which suggests Big Red's GS4 won't be a paperweight when abroad. The filing just leaves AT&T and T-Mobile as the major stragglers in the US; at the current rate, though, they'll have little trouble getting clearance before they have to fulfill any future orders.

PFT: Seahawks trading Flynn appears 'imminent'

Pittsburgh Steelers v Kansas City ChiefsGetty Images

Steelers safety Troy Polamalu says that if the NFL is going to keep passing rules designed to protect the players, the players should get a vote in those rules.

?There?s rule changes every year,? Polamalu said in an interview on SportsCenter. ?I do wish, however, that the NFL did have a voice from the players? side, whether it?s our players? union president, or team captains, or our executive committee on the players? side. Because we?re the guys that realize the risk, we?re the guys on the field.?

Polamalu made his statements within the context of a discussion of the new rule against delivering forcible blows with the top of the helmet outside the tackle box ? a rule change that the Competition Committee did, in fact, ask for player input on before presenting the change to the owners, who approved it by a vote of 31-1. Polamalu said that while he?ll learn to live with the rule, he worries that the game is changing too much.

?We?re professional athletes, so we can adjust, but we grow up understanding instinctively how to play the game of football, and it?s really hard to say, ?OK, eventually I?m not going to be able to use my head, or wrap with my arms? or whatever it may be,? Polamalu said. ?I think you can only do so much to the game before you really start to change the essence of our sport. Our sport is not made for anybody to be able to play it, especially at the NFL level, so there?s obviously some risk that we all take knowingly.?

In Polamalu?s view, there?s a point at which rules designed to make the game safer in reality just make the game softer.

?Football is a very physical sport, and a lot of what separates the good from the great [is] the ability to receive contact, to give contact, to overcome the mental block of injury when you have contact,? Polamalu said. ?I understand that they want the sport to be safer but eventually you?re going to start to take away from the essence of this game and it?s not really going to be the football that we all love and have a passion for.?

And so Polamalu joins the list of players who respond to the rules designed to protect them by saying they don?t want to be protected.

Samsung Exynos Octa now rocking LTE, destined for Korean market

Samsung Exynos Octa now rocking LTE, destined to Korean market

When Samsung's Exynos 5 Octa was announced, it was believed to be compatible with 3G networks only. As such, the HSPA+ (global) version of the Galaxy S 4 was the only handset to feature the company's eight-core SoC -- the LTE model shipping with Qualcomm's 4G-capable, quad-core Snapdragon 600 instead. That's apparently changed, with the Korean giant tweeting that the Exynos 5 Octa now supports LTE on 20 bands. So why even make a Snapdragon 600 version of the Galaxy S 4, then? Perhaps Samsung can't produce as many chips as Qualcomm to meet the upcoming worldwide demand for its new flagship. This appears likely, with inews24 and new-samsunggalaxys4 reporting that the Exynos 5 Octa with LTE is currently reserved for Korean models only (SHV-E300S, SHV-E300K and SHV-E300L, to be exact). So, anyone fancy a trip to Seoul in the near future?

Sandy Hook shooting survivors left homeless by fire

A Newtown, Conn., home destroyed by a fire this week was owned by a couple whose children survived the Sandy Hook Elementary School shootings in December.

Wednesday afternoon's fire left Hans and Audra Barth and their three children homeless, according to Monsignor Robert Wise, of St. Rose of?Lima Church. The American Red Cross has put them up in a hotel and the church is collecting donations for the family.

Two of their children attended Sandy Hook Elementary School, including a first-grader in teacher Kaitlin Roig's classroom,?the?Danbury News-Times?reported. Roig has been called a hero for barricading her students in a bathroom as the shooter killed 20 other first-graders and six educators.

Online betting site InTrade abruptly shuts down

The popular however inevitably controversial online betting site InTrade shut down abruptly on Sunday, citing an ongoing investigation and casting skepticism on Irish law in a vaguely worded statement. "With sincere regret we must inform you that due to circumstances recently discovered we must immediately cease trading activity on?www.intrade.com," the statement says, detailing that all trading on the site must cease, accounts must be settled and all transactions stopped immediately. There's nothing in the statement that boldly says InTrade is gone for good, and the company ends the statement on an almost optimistic note, asking customers to "bear with us as we do all we can to resume operations as promptly as possible." If they can't figure it out, that means no more betting on election results or Oscar winners or anything fun. Back to boring old cards and horses.

RELATED: When Monks Get Punked

Now, the InTrade shutdown was abrupt but not altogether surprising. The Dublin-based company's been in United States regulators' sights for ages, and last November, U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission sued InTrade for running an informal exchange and accused it of breaking an online gambling settlement. This also meant that InTrade would have to cease its U.S. operations prompted pundits to start wondering when the whole house would come crashing down. But then, just over a week ago, those same pundits started wondering if the new wave of states legalizing online gambling could bring InTrade back to the fun, legal center of things. While nothing is final or really even clear at this point, things aren't looking great for InTrade right now. They are however looking pretty good for?Archbishop Angelo Scola, an Italian cardinal favored to succeed Benedict XVI. At least, according to InTrade's numbers they are.

Full Statement from InTrade

With sincere regret we must inform you that due to circumstances recently discovered we must immediately cease trading activity on?www.intrade.com.

These circumstances require immediate further investigation, and may include financial irregularities which in accordance with Irish law oblige the directors to take the following actions:

  • Cease exchange trading on the website immediately.
  • Settle all open positions and calculate the settled account value of all Member accounts immediately.
  • Cease all banking transactions for all existing Company accounts immediately.

During the upcoming weeks, we will investigate these circumstances further and determine the necessary course of action.

To mitigate any further risk to members? accounts, we have closed and settled all open contracts at fair market value as of the close of business on March 10, 2013, in accordance with the Terms and Conditions of our customers? use of the website. You may view your account details and settled account balances by logging into the website.

At this time and until further notice, it is not possible to make any payments to members in accordance with their settled account balance until the investigations have concluded.

The Company will continue the maintenance and technology operations of the exchange system so that all information is preserved properly.

We are not able to provide telephone support or live help services at this time, please contact the company by email at:?accountservices@intrade.com

VATICAN CITY (AP) ? On the eve of their conclave to select a new pope, cardinals held their final debate Monday over whether the Catholic Church needs a manager to clean up the Vatican or a pastor to inspire the faithful at a time of crisis.

The countdown underway, speculation has gone into overdrive about who's ahead in the papal campaign.

Will cardinals choose Cardinal Angelo Scola, the archbishop of Milan, an Italian with serious intellectual and managerial chops who hasn't been tainted by the scandals of the Vatican bureaucracy?

Or has Cardinal Sean O'Malley, the Capuchin monk from Boston who has charmed the Italian media worked the same magic on fellow cardinals?

Most cardinals already knew Canadian Cardinal Marc Ouellet since he heads a powerful Vatican office. But maybe over the past week they've gotten a chance to hear him sing ? he has a fabulous voice and is known for belting out French folk songs.

Whoever it is, there were strong indications that plenty of questions remained about the state of the church and the best man to lead it heading into Tuesday's conclave: Not all the cardinals who wanted to speak were able to Monday, and the cardinals were forced to take a vote about continuing the discussion into the afternoon.

In the end, a majority of cardinals chose to cut short the formal discussion, and the cardinals who did speak shortened their comments, according to the Vatican spokesman the Rev. Federico Lombardi.

"This is a great historical moment but we have got to do it properly, and I think that's why there isn't a real rush to get into things," Cardinal Wilfrid Fox Napier from South Africa said as he left the session.

Cardinal Javier Luis Err?zuriz of Chile was more blunt, saying that while Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger had tremendous support going into the 2005 conclave that elected him Benedict XVI after just four ballots, the same can't be said for any of the candidates in this election.

"This time around, there are many different candidates, so it's normal that it's going to take longer than the last time," he told The Associated Press.

One of the main presentations Monday came from Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone, the Vatican No. 2 who heads the commission of cardinals overseeing the scandal-marred Vatican bank. He outlined the bank's activities and the Holy See's efforts to clean up its reputation in international financial circles, Lombardi said.

The Holy See's finances, and particularly the work of the Vatican bank have been under the spotlight during these pre-conclave meetings as cardinals seek to investigate allegations of corruption in the Vatican administration and get to the bottom of the bank's long history of scandal and secrecy.

There's no clear front-runner for a job most cardinals say they would never want, but a handful of names are circulating as top candidates to lead the 1.2 billion-strong church at a critical time in its history.

Scola is affable and Italian, but not from the Italian-centric Vatican bureaucracy. That makes him attractive perhaps to those seeking reform of the nerve center of the Catholic Church, which was exposed as corrupt and full of petty turf battles by the leaks of papal documents last year.

Brazilian Cardinal Odilo Scherer seems to be favored by some Latin Americans and the Vatican Curia, or bureaucracy. Scherer has a solid handle on the Vatican's finances, sitting on the governing commission of the Vatican bank, the Institute for Religious Works, as well as the Holy See's main budget committee.

As a non-Italian, the archbishop of Sao Paolo would be expected to name an Italian insider as secretary of state ? the Vatican No. 2 who runs day-to-day affairs at the Holy See ? another plus for Vatican-based cardinals who would want one of their own running the shop.

The pastoral camp seems to be focusing on two Americans, Cardinals Timothy Dolan of New York and O'Malley. Neither has Vatican experience, though Dolan served in the 1990s as rector of the Pontifical North American College, the U.S. seminary up the hill from the Vatican. He has admitted his Italian isn't strong ? perhaps a handicap for a job in which the lingua franca of day-to-day administration is Italian and the pope's other role as bishop of Rome.

If the leading names fail to reach the 77 votes required for victory in the first few rounds of balloting, any number of surprise names could come to the fore as alternatives.

Those include Cardinal Luis Tagle, archbishop of Manila. He is young ? at age 55 the second-youngest cardinal voting ? and was only named a cardinal last November. While his management skills haven't been tested in Rome, Tagle ? with a Chinese-born mother ? is seen as the face of the church in Asia, where Catholicism is growing.

Whoever it is, the new pope will face a church in crisis: Benedict XVI spent his eight-year pontificate trying to revive Catholicism from the secular trends which have made it almost irrelevant in places like Europe, once a stronghold of Christianity. Clerical sex abuse scandals have soured many faithful on their church, and competition from rival evangelical churches in Latin America and Africa has drawn souls away.

Tuesday begins with the cardinals checking into the Vatican's Domus Sanctae Martae, a modern, industrial-feel hotel on the edge of the Vatican gardens. While the rooms are impersonal, they're a step up from the cramped conditions cardinals faced before the hotel was first put to use in 2005; in conclaves past, lines in the Apostolic Palace used to form for using bathrooms.

Tuesday morning, the dean of the College of Cardinals, Angelo Sodano, leads the celebration of the "Pro eligendo Pontificie" Mass ? the Mass for the election of a pope ? inside St. Peter's Basilica, joined by the 115 cardinals who will vote.

They break for lunch at the hotel, and return for the 4:30 p.m. procession into the Sistine Chapel, chanting the Litany of Saints, the hypnotic Gregorian chant imploring the intercession of the saints to help guide the voting. They then take their oath of secrecy and listen to a meditation by elderly Maltese Cardinal Prosper Grech.

While the cardinals are widely expected to cast the first ballot Tuesday afternoon, technically they don't have to. In conclaves past, the cardinals have always voted on the first day.

The first puffs of smoke from the Sistine Chapel chimney should emerge sometime around 8 p.m. Black smoke from the burned ballot papers means no pope. White smoke means the 266th pope has been chosen.

Call for papers: Special Issue of Gender & Society | ISA RC22 News ...

Gender is one of the most salient features of religious movements and religious institutions. Women are the majority of participants in religious life and they are increasingly significant actors in religious movements and politics. In many religious traditions, cultural and religious continuity hinges on gendered practices and sexual regimes.

Many regions of the world are experiencing important transformations with respect to religion. For instance, China has seen an enormous upsurge in participation in religious and spiritual movements, including large numbers of women. Evangelical Christianity is an increasingly significant player in society and politics across the Global South.

Buddhist women in Asia are taking on positions of greater authority in their religious tradition. Hindu nationalism in India and Islamist governments coming to power in the Middle East and North Africa, have given renewed urgency to questions about women and religion. And in the United States, many political debates continue to be polarized by religious affiliation and these debates have become significant issues in public discourse.

Despite the growing popular and scholarly interest in religion, scholarship on gender and religion remains under-conceptualized and marginalized in the discipline of sociology. This special issue of Gender & Society seeks to bring together a range of empirical studies at the intersection of gender and religion in diverse contexts to in order to develop new theoretical concepts and perspectives that can illuminate these issues.Gender & Society is one of the most highly cited journals in sociology, and we expect this issue to become a significant platform for emerging scholarship that will point toward new directions and continuing conversations in the study of gender and religion.

We welcome papers that interrogate the gendered nature of religious communities, movements, and experiences while recognizing the centrality of religion in the lives ofmany communities and individuals. Especially welcome are papers that highlighttransnational work that is grounded in deep regional knowledge, papers that bridgedifferent religions, and papers that contribute to theorizing of major conceptual debates in the study of gender and sociology more generally. Empirical and theoretical issues may include:

? Religion, structure, and agency

? Religious social movements

? Religious sexual cultures

? Religious masculinities

? Gendered religious practices

? Religion, gender, and politics

? Religion, gender, and everyday life

? Gender and secularism/post-secularism

? Religious law and gender

? Religion and activism for social/gender justice ? Religion, gender, and economic life / and or class ? Intersectional perspectives on gender and religion ? Religion, gender, and nationalism

Completed manuscripts, due September 1, 2013, should be submitted online to http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/gendsoc and should specify in the cover letter that the paper is to be considered for the special issue.

Aging and Its Effects on Your Eyes | Healthcare, Fitness, Nutrition ...

Eyesight Changes that Come with Aging

Mar 9, 2013

Certain eye diseases associated with aging can appear suddenly. They may be a previous untreated problem or simply genetic origins (several family members have or have had eye problems at some point in their life). Whatever triggering or predisposing factors, you should go to your ophthalmologist regularly, regardless of age.

eyesight

- Childhood ? At birth, children are very sensitive to light and they cannot focus the objects and distinguish colors well. Their eyesight, however, continues to develop in the first months of life. Up to one month, babies can focus on objects within a view distance of up to 3 meters. After four months, they can see things from a room quite clearly distinguished and a full range of colors and shades. Vision problems such myopia and amblyopia or lazy eye can be detected at these ages. Approximately 1 in 4 school-aged children have vision problems, most often suffering from myopia. Experts recommend eye examination before starting school and then every two years. As they eyes develop as the child grows, myopia gets worse until the age of about 20 years.

It was also found that 3 percent of all children are affected by amblyopia. This disease occurs when nerve signals between the brain and eyes not working properly. Most of the children can be successfully treated by applying a patch over the healthy eyes or other methods.

- Maturity ? healthy adults, younger than 40 years, have a pretty good view. To maintain healthy eyes is necessary to wear sunglasses, protective equipment at work and at home. Also, avoid dryness, fatigue and eye strain by limiting time spent in front of the monitor or TV. The need of wearing bifocals when reading is a classic sign for middle aged people. The condition is called presbyopia , is normal and a result of reduced flexibility of the eye lens.

- Old age ? Among the diseases that can have negative effects on vision include diabetes and hypertension. Diabetes is a leading cause of blindness incidents in adults, as it can trigger retinopathy. High blood pressure can cause permanent vision loss due to damage to the blood vessels and nerves. Cataracts and glaucoma are eye diseases more common in people over the age of 60. Cataract is the clouding of the eye lens. However, it can be removed and replaced with a special lens during surgery. Glaucoma is eye nerve damage as a result of aging. Glaucoma is accompanied by increased ocular tension. Treatment can be both medicinal and surgical and aims at lowering eye pressure. Macular degeneration can be treated or not, depending on its type. In some cases it can cause partial loss of vision.

To maintain eye health eat foods rich in omega 3 fatty acids, vitamins C, E and A.

Obama's Charm Offensive Could Work, Lawmakers Say

WASHINGTON - President Obama's newly initiated charm offensive with Republicans just might work as he tries to resolve the recently enacted sequester cuts and attempts to avert another budget showdown near the end of the month, lawmakers on Capitol Hill said today.

"If we're going to really get to an agreement, this is a good step," Sen. Ron Johnson, R-Wis., told George Stephanopoulos on ABC News' "This Week." "You have to start meeting with people. You have to start developing relationships. You've got to spend a fair amount of time figuring out what we agree on first."

"I'm welcoming with open arms. I think the president is tremendously sincere. I don't think this is just a political change in tactic," Sen. Tom Coburn, R-Okla., who called the president "my friend" said on NBC's "Meet the Press.

"It's time to start leading, and the way you do that is quit poking your finger in people's eyes and start building relationships, and I think he's got a great chance to accomplish a big deal," he said. "But, you know, you've got a lot of scabs and sores on people that it's going to take a while for that to heal."

Coburn and Johnson were among the 12 Republican senators who dined with Obama at the Jefferson Hotel earlier this week - the president's first overture in his GOP courtship. On Thursday, he sat down for lunch at the White House with Republican Rep. Paul Ryan, chairman of the House Budget committee, and Rep. Chris Van Hollen, the ranking Democrat on the committee, a meeting Ryan described as his first ever detailed discussion with the president.

"This is the first time I've ever had a conversation with the president lasting more than, say, two minutes or televised exchanges," Ryan said on "Fox News Sunday." "I've never really had a conversation with him, on these issues before. I am excited that we had the conversation. We had a very frank exchange. We come from different perspectives. I ran against him in the last election."

Ryan said the budget plan he will unveil later this week will "promote repealing Obamacare and replacing it with a better system."

Next week, the president is expected to continue his wooing of lawmakers, traveling to Capitol Hill over three days as he attends each party's weekly meetings.

"He's coming to the House conference, which I think is positive. He's only done that once before, but he should come and listen and communicate and try to find where we can find common ground, where can we bring that accountability back to government. That's what Republicans are looking for," House Republican Whip Kevin McCarthy said on CNN's "State of the Union."

"Any time that both parties are talking, it's a good thing," he said. "Now, this should have happened four years ago. I'm glad it's happening now. But is this about politics or is this genuine?"

Democrats also said the president's outreach was a positive step.

"I think the meetings are a good idea because you understand each other better and you may get a measure of courage," House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi said on CNN's "State of the Union. "All of us come here to get a job done for the American people, and certainly that is the case with the president of the United States. He's been very bipartisan in his approach.

"These meetings are not something to say, well I'll do this with you now, and I'll do that with them later," she said. "I think it is let's get some things done together to make elections less important. Let's come together for the benefit of the American people."

But as the president makes strides to meet with Republicans in the coming weeks, Rep. Cory Gardner, R-Colo., said he doesn't expect the outreach to result in an agreement immediately, saying on NBC's "Meet the Press," "I hope that he's genuine, but I don't think we'll be doing the Harlem Shake anytime soon."

Bombs, clashes with Karzai mar Hagel's Afghan trip

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) ? Two suicide bombings and a host of looming disagreements with the Afghan president cast a shadow on Saturday over U.S. Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel's first visit to Afghanistan since taking the post.

Nineteen Afghans were killed ? including eight children ? in the suicide attacks in Kabul and in the eastern Khost province. A U.S. contractor was killed and four soldiers injured when attackers thought to be Afghan soldiers stormed their base and opened fire Friday, just hours before Hagel arrived.

"This attack was a message to him," Taliban spokesman Zabiullah Mujahid said in an email to reporters about one of the bombings, which was outside the country's Defense Ministry in Kabul.

Afghan President Hamid Karzai, meanwhile, was standing by a demand that U.S. special operations forces leave a province neighboring Kabul by Monday for alleged abuses of Afghan civilians ? charges U.S. officials deny. And a handover ceremony scheduled for Saturday of a U.S. detention facility also fell through, when U.S. and Afghan officials ran into last-minute disagreements.

The barrage of crises heralding Hagel's arrival illustrates the complex minefield of diplomatic and military issues facing the U.S.-led NATO force, and the Obama administration, as they hand over the country's security to Afghans ahead of the 2014 deadline for the end of NATO combat operations.

The violence also shows the Afghan security forces' struggle to contain the Taliban as NATO troops slowly withdraw, even as Afghan President Hamid Karzai argues for his government to have more control over Afghanistan's security.

Hagel told reporters he thought he could resolve the special operations issue with face-to-face meetings with Karzai Sunday. And Karzai released a statement late Saturday saying he believed the detention issue had been resolved, and the handover would go ahead within a week, though U.S. officials had no comment.

The prison transfer, originally slated for 2009, has been repeatedly delayed because of disputes between the U.S. and Afghan governments about whether all detainees should have the right to a trial and who will have the ultimate authority over the release of prisoners the U.S. considers a threat.

The Afghan government has maintained that it needs full control over which prisoners are released as a matter of national sovereignty. The issue has threatened to undermine ongoing negotiations for a bilateral security agreement that would govern the presence of U.S. forces in Afghanistan after the current combat mission ends in 2014.

NATO officials see the weekend violence as part of the Taliban's coming campaign for the spring fighting season. "There's a series of attacks that have started as the snow is thawing. We had a potential insider attack yesterday ... and there's been a number of attacks on the border," said Brigadier Adam Findlay, NATO's deputy chief of staff of operations, in an interview with The Associated Press Saturday.

In the first attack Saturday, a suicide bomber on a bicycle struck outside the Afghan Defense Ministry around 9 a.m. local time, just as employees were arriving for work. About a half hour later, another suicide bomber targeted a joint NATO and Afghan patrol near a police checkpoint in Khost city, the capital of Khost province in eastern Afghanistan, said provincial spokesman Baryalai Wakman.

Nine Afghan civilians were killed in the bombing at the ministry and 14 wounded, and two Afghan policemen and eight children died in the blast in Khost while another two Afghan civilians were wounded, according to a statement from Karzai's office.

Karzai condemned the bombings, calling them un-Islamic. "The perpetrators of such attacks are cowards who are killing innocent children at the orders of foreigners," he said in a statement emailed to reporters. Karzai usually uses the term "foreigners" to refer to Pakistan, which he blames for failing to crack down on Taliban militants who take sanctuary there.

Hagel was nowhere near the Kabul blast, but heard it across the city. He told reporters traveling with him that he wasn't sure what it was.

"We're in a war zone, I've been in war. You know, so ? you shouldn't be surprised when a bomb goes off or there's an explosion," said Hagel, a Vietnam War veteran. Asked what his message to the Taliban would be, he said that the U.S. was going to continue to work with its allies to insure that the Afghan people have the ability to develop their own country and democracy.

In addition, a suspected insider attack by Afghan soldiers against their U.S. allies occurred in Kapisa province in eastern Afghanistan several hours before Hagel arrived Friday. Three men presumed to be Afghan soldiers forced their way onto a U.S. base and opened fire, killing one U.S. civilian contractor and wounding four U.S. soldiers, according to a senior U.S. military official.

The official said investigators were "95 percent certain it was an insider attack," because the three men came from the Afghan side of the joint U.S.-Afghan base, and rammed an Afghan army Humvee through a checkpoint dividing the base, before jumping out and opening fire on the Americans with automatic weapons. All three attackers were killed.

The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak publicly.

The Taliban said it was not behind the Tagab base attack, and has not yet weighed in on the attack in Khost, but the group claimed responsibility for the morning attack at the Defense Ministry shortly after it happened.

Jim Carrey, Steve Carell bring "Burt Wonderstone" magic to SXSW

AUSTIN, Texas (Reuters) - Comedians Jim Carrey and Steve Carell brought a touch of magic to the opening day of the South by Southwest Conferences & Festivals in Austin, Texas on Friday, with the premiere of their new film "The Incredible Burt Wonderstone."

"Burt Wonderstone," out in U.S. theaters on March 15, tells the tale of childhood friends Burt (Carell) and Anton (Steve Buscemi) who bond over their love of magic, growing up to become a world-famous magician duo.

They soon find their skills and friendship tested in a constantly evolving world of magic and entertainment, as audiences demand something new with the arrival of edgy illusionist Steve Gray (Carrey).

Carrey, decked out in a red jacket and silver shoes on Friday's red carpet, said that despite playing a magician, he resented magic. "I've always had this weird relationship with magic. I think it's fascinating and yet it annoys me because I can't figure it out," Carrey said.

The funnyman was joined by co-stars Carell, who wore jeans, and Olivia Wilde, who wore a striped navy and white dress and signed autographs for fans.

Carell said he learned a bit of magic for the tricks that were shown up close in the film. "Some of those things you just can't fake," Carell said on the red carpet.

Inside the historic Paramount Theatre in downtown Austin, audience members laughed loudly throughout the film, and the stars answered their questions afterward.

Carell told the audience his character's orangey glow was achieved through weekly spray-tanning. He said it wasn't until the final days of shooting that he realized that only his face and chest showed in the film, meaning he had gotten repeatedly sprayed from head to toe for "no reason whatsoever."

The world premiere marked the opening of the film portion of South by Southwest, where creative types from all over the world converge in the Texas capital to swap ideas about film, music and technology.

SXSW, which began as a music event in 1987, runs for 10 days. The Interactive portion runs March 8-12, and the Music portion runs March 12-17. Film events run until March 16.

More than 60,000 people registered for SXSW conferences last year, and SXSW officials estimate the growth for 2013 to be in the 5-8 percent range.

Featured speakers at this year's SXSW include former Vice President Al Gore, actor Matthew McConaughey, retired basketball star Shaquille O'Neal and Dave Grohl, the former Nirvana drummer who founded the Foo Fighters.

Headliner films include the world premiere of "Evil Dead," starring Jane Levy and Shiloh Fernandez, while Green Day, Depeche Mode and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs are among the musical performers slated.

Wedding planning on Pinterest

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV)- There are no more guessing games when Amy Craparo is creating a wedding cake.

Instead of looking through magazine clippings or listening to clients describing what they want, the owner of Wow Factor Cakes?uses another tool.

"It's very hard for some folks to do that to verbalize actually what they're looking," says Amy.

"When brides send over?their pinterest inspiration board, before they even walk through the door I have an idea of that what they are looking for."

Pinterest is a free web site where users "pin" photos of items to their photo collection.

"People are very visual so the more visual images you get in front of clients the better it is," says Amy.

The photos can be organized under specific topics, such as wedding dresses or cakes.

Then other users can see the photos and re-pin the ones they like to their own Pinterest accounts.?

Amy says the site has revolutionized wedding planning for the better.

"Because it's so visual, because you get a sense of every aspect of the wedding planning, their dress, their decor their color palette," says Amy.

With Pinterest she?is not only creating more detailed cakes, Amy is?also creating more clientele.

"To get our work out there, to see what others are doing in the industry, to keep up on trends."

According to Pinterest,? approximately 68 percent of the site's users are female, and nearly one-third of those women are ages 25 to 34.

So it's no wonder Pinterest seems to be booming with the wedding industry.

911 Staff Assists Upvalley Law Enforcement With Clearer ...

In an emergency situation ? medical, family or law enforcement ? communication is vital.????????????????

It is important for public safety or EMS personnel to have clear, reliable radio service available to call for help or other necessary assistance.????????????????

Because of the terrain and elevation, several sections of Lackawanna County have dead air space, causing a major problem.????????????????

Archbald and Scott Township were two communities that serious radio signal issues affected response time or securing additional assistance.????????????????

In stepped David Hahn, Lackawanna County?s 911 Director, and John Lewis, 911 Assistant Director, to offer support.????????????????

?David Hahn and John Lewis actually listened and got the job done in six months,? explained Scott Township Police Chief James Romano.?????????????????

A new votive receiver was installed at Scott Township?s Municipal Park, the location of its radio tower.? This action has helped tremendously.? It enabled the Chiefs to have clearer communications, allow for better and faster service, and insure the officers? safety when backup is required.??????????????????

Chief Timothy Trently of Archbald had similar dead space issues with his radios.? This hurt the department in answering service responses, calling for back-up, or contacting officers in general.? The tower has helped tremendously.???????????????????

One of the new County innovations that both Chief Trently and Chief Romano are looking forward to is the wireless network.????????????????

?The wireless network will be key.? It will widen or provide for more frequencies, enabling us to have a mobile data terminal (MDT) in the vehicle, and also allow us to use instant messaging and Penn DOT?s jnet, and do e citations,?? said Chief Trently.????????????????

The installation of the receiver has made public safety service in the upvalley a lot better. More units are now on the road and, with the mobile terminals, dispatchers can send messages right into the vehicles.????????????????

All of this technology points to one crucial development ? better service to the people of Lackawanna County.

Rebel Dell shareholder demands more information

(AP) ? Dell's largest independent shareholder is turning up the pressure against the proposed $24.4 billion sale of the struggling personal computer maker to a group of investors that includes its CEO.

In a letter Tuesday, Southeastern Asset Management demanded that Dell Inc. provide a list of the company's other stockholders. Obtaining that information could help Southeastern rally support for a shareholder mutiny to block the deal.

Dell, which is based in Round Rock, Texas, said it will review Southeastern's request.

Dell's board of directors last month announced plans to sell the company to founder and CEO Michael Dell and others led by investment firm Silver Lake for $13.65 per share. If the sale is completed, it will end Dell's 25-year history as a publicly traded company and enable Michael Dell to attempt to engineer a turnaround without having to cater to Wall Street's desire for higher profits from one quarter to the next.

Southeastern, which is based in Memphis, Tenn., contends Dell is giving its CEO a bargain that will deprive long-time shareholders of the opportunity to share in the potential upturn in the company's performance. The investment firm, which owns an 8.4 percent stake in Dell, says the company is worth closer to $24 per share. Dell's stock hasn't traded at that level since Michael Dell returned for a second stint as CEO more than six years ago.

Michael Dell is contributing a 14 percent stake in the company to help finance the proposed buyout, which will consist primarily of debt.

Dell Inc. said its shareholders are being fairly compensated at $13.65 per share while also being insulated from future risks facing the company as it tries to lessen its dependence on the slumping personal computer market and expand into the more profitable technology sectors of business software, data analysis and storage and consulting.

Investors are betting Michael Dell and his backers will either raise their offer or another bidder will up the ante. Dell's stock gained seven cents Tuesday to close at $14.07.

Despite free treatment, Britain lags others on health

LONDON (Reuters) - Years of universal healthcare, rising health spending, cancer screening, immunisation and anti-smoking laws have failed to stop Britain falling behind its peers in reducing early death and disease, a study showed on Tuesday.

Researchers who compared Britain's health performance since 1990 with 14 European Union countries plus Australia, Canada, Norway and the United States said its pace of decline in premature death was "persistently and significantly" behind the average - a finding they described as "startling".

Chris Murray, who led the work at the University of Washington, said Britain's poor performance was partly due to dramatic increases in Alzheimer's disease and in drug and alcohol abuse problems, and to a failure to tackle leading killers such as heart disease, strokes and lung diseases.

"Concerted action is urgently needed," said Murray, director of the university's Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation, whose study was published in the medical journal The Lancet.

Using data from a vast study called the Global Burden of Diseases, headline findings of which were published last year, researchers analysed patterns of ill health and death in Britain, calculated the contribution of various preventable risk factors, and ranked it among high-income countries that spent similar amounts on health in 1990 and 2010.

They found that only in men older than 55 years had seen significantly faster drops in death rates than other nations over the last 20 years.

Britain's ranking in premature mortality rates for adults aged between 20 and 54 had "worsened substantially", they found.

This was partly due to dramatic growth in problems linked to drugs and alcohol, which were ranked among the least important causes of death in this age group in 1990 - ranked 32nd and 43rd respectively - but rose to sixth and 18th place in 2010.

    "WAKE-UP CALL"

Kevin Fenton, Director of Health and Wellbeing at Public Health England, who worked with Murray on the study, said the findings were "both a wake-up call and an opportunity".

"While it's encouraging that overall the health of the UK has improved substantially since the last report, the pace of improvement is not enough," he said in a statement.

The study found Britain's eight leading causes of death have changed little in the last 20 years, with heart disease, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, stroke, lung cancer and lower respiratory infections remaining the top five.

There has been a startling increase Alzheimer's disease - which rose from 24th to 10th place - in cirrhosis, which is linked to alcohol abuse, and in drug use disorders. They rose from 14th to 9th position and from 64th to 21st respectively.

Andrew Chidgey of the Alzheimer's Society said he was sad but not surprised by the findings on rising cases of the brain-wasting condition. "With numbers soaring and costs trebling, we need urgent action to find more effective treatments," he said.

The study found that in 2010, Britain had significantly lower premature death rates from diabetes, road injuries, liver cancer and chronic kidney disease on average than other nations.

But it had not kept pace on rates of early death from other conditions such as heart and lung diseases, breast and oesophageal cancer and pre-term birth complications.

Commenting on the findings, Edmund Jessop from the UK Faculty of Public Health in London said there was "plenty of room for bold action by politicians".

He said ministers should introduce tighter health policies such as plain packaging for cigarettes, a minimum price for alcohol, a ban on trans fats, improved control of hypertension and a greater focus on psychiatric disorders.

"Alternatively, the UK can continue to languish at the bottom of European league tables," he said.
