NEW YORK (AP) ? K'naan kicked off a free concert in Central Park on Saturday evening that also included performances by Black Keys and John Legend to call attention to poverty worldwide.

Dubbed the Global Citizen Festival, the concert lineup featured Neil Young, Band of Horses and Foo Fighters as well. Video of the event was streamed worldwide as about 60,000 music fans poured into the park.

The concert included a surprise appearance from Legend, who played "Imagine" at a piano on the Great Lawn stage, a short walk from where the song's author, John Lennon, once lived.

The concert was scheduled around the meeting of the United Nations General Assembly in New York this week and organizers used an innovative approach to ticket distribution so that many concert-goers were forced to learn about an array of global problems, such as polio, malaria, child mortality, and polluted drinking water, in order to get a ticket.

Anyone wanting free tickets had to register at globalcitizen.org, which then required users to watch videos or read information about poverty-related issues. Each time material was consumed, users could earn points toward a drawing for tickets. Points were also accumulated by sharing information via Twitter or Facebook.

"Our social media campaign has been off the charts," said Hugh Evans, CEO and co-founder of the Global Poverty Project. The approach demonstrates a new model for harnessing digital tools that may be repeated for other big events with political or social messages.

Organizers said more than 71,000 people had signed up online, resulting in more than 3.5 million page views. On average, they spent just over six minutes consuming content or sharing information. Nearly 200,000 pieces of information were shared on Facebook, and just a bit more than that on Twitter. About 170,000 people signed petitions via the site, and there were 98,000 videos viewed to completion.

Evans said the project achieved its goals, set out last year, of getting more than 100,000 people to take action related to extreme poverty while telling a new story about the challenges. To that end, the site conveys information in detailed, documentary-like accounts and uses an array of video, graphics and stories that are friendly for mobile and digital consumption.

Financially, he said, the project also achieved its yearlong goal ? working with an array of organizations like the U.S. Fund for UNICEF, the Earth Institute and Rotary International ? of garnering $500 million in commitments to help fight poverty.

So now what?

Evans said that he's hoping the audience, built online and at the concert, will continue efforts by tweeting President Obama and Republican challenger Mitt Romney to halve extreme poverty by 2015, which is the key U.N. anti-poverty goal. And Evans is working on an announcement in October or November about "a major rock band" getting involved with the anti-poverty efforts.

Can Mobile Phone Use Lead to Brain Tumors?

There are currently close to 6 billion mobile phone subscriptions worldwide, and increased usage of cell phones has understandably led to a greater level of interest in how safe they are. The main concern for our health is that mobile phones emit and receive electromagnetic radiation as a result of their need to communicate with relay towers, and some of this radiation is absorbed by the head when the phone is held up to the ear. Whether or not the radiation (both the amount and the frequency) that a typical mobile phone user is likely to receive is potentially damaging to their health has been the subject of debate for some time.

Anecdotal evidence that high mobile phone use can potentially lead to brain tumors is not hard to find. Newspapers and other media sources are only too ready to run such stories. However, given that there are so many people using mobile communication so regularly, the chances are that someone is going to have a brain tumor at some point, whether or not there is any link with the amount of time they spend on their phone. The obvious question is whether or not there is good reason to be concerned over how and how much you use your phone.

The most recent assessment of the scientific evidence of mobile phone safety was carried out by the European Commission Scientific Committee on Emerging and Newly Identified Health Risks (SCENIHR). They concluded that mobile phone usage was unlikely to increase the risk of developing brain tumors.

The most recent results from a long-term study by researchers from the Institute of Cancer Epidemiology at the Danish Cancer Society in Denmark also failed to find any link between mobile phone usage and the development of brain tumors or any other cancers of the nervous system. This study was particularly significant in that it used most of the Danish population to determine if there was any difference in the incidence of brain cancers between mobile phone users and non-mobile phone users. Unsurprisingly, this work has been quoted frequently, especially by cell phone companies, as evidence that their products have now been given a completely clean bill of health.

In contrast to the previous results, the conclusion of a 2010 paper published in the International Journal of Epidemiology on the subject suggested that while no overall link was found between two kinds of brain tumor and mobile phone usage, the data did point to a possible increase in the development of glioma-type tumors in the most intensive users. The authors also pointed out that since the new generations of smart phones are being used for even greater periods of time, especially by younger people, further and ongoing studies in this area are definitely merited.

In 2011, the World Health Organization (WHO) classified mobile phone radiation as ?potentially carcinogenic to humans.? Following from this, many countries have adopted a precautionary approach and suggested moderation in cell phone usage. Using a hands-free kit to avoid holding a phone next to your head has also been advised. While the available evidence suggests that low and normal usage of a mobile phone does not increase your risk of developing a brain tumor, it is probably wise to reduce your exposure to electromagnetic radiation as much as you can, and certainly to avoid spending long periods of the day with a phone next to your ear.

Google has made a point of relying on renewable resources for its data centers whenever possible, even down to the cooling. It hasn't had quite as unique an arrangement as what it's planning for its data center in Oklahoma, though. The search firm wants to supply its Mayes County location with 48MW of wind energy from Apex's Canadian Hills Wind Project, but it isn't buying power directly from the source. Instead, it's making a deal with the Grand River Dam Authority, a utility, to purchase the clean power on top of what's already supplied from the GRDA at present. The deal should keep the data center on the environmentally friendly side while giving it room to grow. Wind power will come online at Google's facility once the Canadian Hills effort is up and running later in 2012; hopefully, that gives us enough time to better understand why there's a Canadian River and Canadian Hills to be found in the southern United States.

Over time, I hope to share some practical and hopefully valuable insights with you about life and law.

Life happens. You may find yourself buying and selling a home, renting an apartment, signing a lease, starting a business, being an employee or employer, owning a dog, being a neighbour, taking care of your parents, making an estate plan, having a problem at city hall, or dealing with a lawsuit. Most people will deal with a lawyer at least once in their lifetime.

That is why the best advice is to have your estate plan in order. Dying without a will is not only costly; you may lose control over your estate to many competing things ? the public trustee, the courts, or perhaps unhappy family members. No two estates are alike, but the common denominator for those who die without a will is that there is more expense, more legal work required, and a lot more stress for those left behind to clean things up.

Your will should not be confused with a power of attorney.? The will kicks in at the time of death. It speaks for you. It tells your executor exactly how things are to be distributed.

Your power of attorney is used when you are alive. You are legally donating your capacity to another person to make decisions for you. He or she can step in and pay your bills. He or she can also make medical decisions for you. The key is to select someone who knows you well, whose judgment you trust, and is close by.

Choosing who will act as your power of attorney is not a decision to be made lightly. You are granting an enormous amount of trust and responsibility to another person and you must give it real thought. You should also think about a substitute if your first choice is not available. The focus is making the appointment while you can, not allowing decisions to be made later by default by others ? including the Province.

If you have elderly parents, it is important that their powers of attorney are in place. If you have small children, you need to give some thought to appointing guardians and custodians. The most heartbreaking scenario is where there is a family situation over minors and uncertainty over schools, relocation, the house ? it does not end. Parents appointing guardians and setting up proper trusts for the kids can avoid all the disarray that flows from having no will in place.

A lighter aside is the amount of phone calls many lawyers receive from folks leaving on a trip, who are suddenly in a mad panic to have their wills put in order. The underlying belief is they may not return from the Bermuda Triangle. Sometimes we can accommodate, but of course, the process takes time to think through and structure correctly. I am happy to report that every single client of mine over the past 22 years has returned safe and sound from their journeys abroad. Sadly some have met mishaps and accidents in everyday life; others have passed unexpectedly in their sleep with no will in place. There never is a wrong time to be organized.

Another popular tool of estate planning is a living will. Most people chose to have one done at the time they tackle their estate plan. The living will has no legal effect, but it has a certain moral suasion, in that it clearly states your wishes if you become so sick that there is no quality of life and you are virtually vegetative. Your living will requests you are not kept alive by heroic measures or artificial means such as life support.? It is a very personal decision but one that equally requires some thought.

A proper estate plan today consists of your updated will, two power of attorneys ? one for medical decisions and one for property decisions ? and a living will, highly recommended so your family knows your wishes. There are different considerations for common law couples and same sex couples as well. And if you are an artist or a musician ? don?t forget your copyright! It lasts for 50 years after you?re gone!

Researchers at Moffitt Cancer Center, concerned that women who quit smoking during their pregnancies often resume smoking after they deliver their baby, tested self-help interventions designed to prevent postpartum smoking relapse.

?We?d first like to see more women quit smoking when they become pregnant,? said Thomas H. Brandon, Ph.D., senior member at Moffitt and chair of the Department of Health Outcomes and Behavior.? ?However, even among those who do quit, the majority return to smoking shortly after they give birth.?

According to the researchers, nearly 50 percent of pregnant women who smoke quit during their pregnancies, but relapse rates are estimated at between 50 and 80 percent. Not only is this resumption of smoking harmful for the new mothers, but their babies could also be exposed to dangerous environmental tobacco smoke (ETS).

?More and more women are aware that it is in the best interest of their child to give up alcohol and cigarettes while pregnant,? said Dr. Brandon, the study?s senior author. ?But, unfortunately, they don?t realize that exposing their infant to ETS can be equally as harmful.?

Infants exposed to ETS are more likely to suffer from respiratory, die of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS), get middle ear infections, have lower IQ?s and more behavioral problems, and to become smokers themselves later in life.? Also, a mother who returns to smoking loses the progress she?s made to improve her health and life expectancy.

In an effort to find better ways to prevent smoking relapse in new mothers, the researchers recruited 504 women from around the United States.? All were in their fourth to eighth month of pregnancy and had already quit smoking. Half of the women were mailed two existing ?usual care? self-help guides about quitting smoking and the dangers of ETS on newborns.? The other half were sent a series of ten booklets developed at Moffitt, titled ?Forever Free for Baby and Me.? These booklets provided more detailed information about how to stay off cigarettes during and after pregnancy.? Additional support information for the mom-to-be?s partner was also included the series.

By eight months after they gave birth, 70 percent of the women who received the ?Forever Free? series reported that they remained off cigarettes, compared to 59 percent of those who received the ?usual care? booklets.?

The researchers reported that the treatment effect depended upon the women?s household income and age. For example, among lower income women earning less than $30,000 per year who received the ?Forever Free? intervention, 72 percent were not smoking a year after giving birth, compared to 51 percent for women who received ?usual care.? In contrast, women with higher incomes received no additional benefit from the ?Forever Free? booklets.? The effect of age was similar to income, with younger women showing greater benefit from the ?Forever Free? booklets.

?Our booklets were designed to be accessible to a diverse population with respect to content, reading level and graphic design,? said co-author Vani Nath Simmons, Ph.D, an assistant member at Moffitt.? ?We think that they provided novel information and assistance to these women--information that may have already been available to older and higher-income women.?

The researchers concluded that ?Forever Free for Baby and Me,? ?a minimal, inexpensive, self-help intervention? has the potential to reach and help pregnant women and new mothers ? a particularly challenging subpopulation of smokers.

The study was published online in the American Journal of Public Health.

Treatment for alcoholism dramatically reduces the financial burden of addiction on families

The financial effects of alcoholism on the family members of addicts can be massive, but little is known about whether treatment for alcoholism reduces that financial burden. A study of 48 German families published online today in the journal Addiction reveals that after twelve months of treatment, family costs directly related to a family member's alcoholism decreased from an average of ?676.44 (?529.91, US$832.26) per month to an average of ?145.40 (?113.90, $178.89) per month. Put another way, average costs attributable to alcoholism decreased from 20.2% to 4.3% of the total pre-tax family income.

Among those 48 families, two of the largest family expenditures directly related to alcoholism were for alcoholic beverages (averaging ?252.13/?197.51/$310.29 per month) and cigarettes (averaging ?92.98/?72.83/$114.43 per month). Twelve months into treatment, those costs had reduced to ?70.63 (?55.32, $86.92) and ?64.21 (?50.29, $79.04) per month.

Also, after twelve months of treatment, the average amount of time spent caring for the affected family member dropped from 32.2 hours per month to 8.2 hours per month. Using the minimum wage in Germany for employees in the nursing industry (?8.50 per hour), informal care provided by family members initially piled on an additional financial burden of ?274.30 (?214.87, $337.66) per month, which reduced to ?69.79 (?54.67, $85.88) per month after one year of treatment.

Even in cases of relapse, treatment for alcoholism still reduced the financial burden on families, but only by ?65.22 (?51.09, $80.26) per month on average.

Lead author Dr. Salize (Central Institute of Mental Health, Mannheim, Germany) says, "We're opening up an area of addiction research that doesn't receive much attention. When they look at effects on families, addiction studies mainly focus on problems such as domestic violence and depression, not on the financial burden of caring for an alcoholic. But when health services and policymakers study the costs and benefits of treating alcoholism, they need to know that treatment has an immense financial effect not just on the alcoholic but also on his or her spouse, partner, children, and parents. The benefits of treatment reach well beyond the individual patient."

These days, the Internet is awash with the term ?content marketing? and its slight variants (like ?online content marketing,? about which I for one have been incessantly writing). To clarify terms, I present to the reader a brief but serviceable (one could almost say ?textbook?) definition of content marketing:

Content marketing is an overarching term encompassing all marketing formats that involve the creation and sharing of content in order to engage current and potential consumer bases. The idea behind content marketing is pretty straightforward: by delivering high-quality, relevant and valuable information to prospects and customers, businesses can kindle reader interest, attract targeted prospects, generate relevant leads, and foster brand loyalty.

Online content marketing consists of blogs, eBooks, whitepapers, webcasts, webinars, podcasts, videos and eMails. Brands use both online and traditional content marketing to achieve a variety of business goals. These may include: brand awareness, website traffic, lead generation, customer acquisition and retention, engagement, thought leadership, sales, and lead nurturing, to name a few.

That?s great and all, but why should I care? Why do I need content marketing? At the end of the day, what is content marketing going to do for me and my business?

Fair questions.

By way of reply, I shall endeavor to take the approach of a philosopher and answer with another question:

What are the Primary (Business) Functions of Content Marketing?

CM Creates Brand Awareness: Kinda like putting a $100 bill in the collection plate, it?s a polite way of calling attention to yourself without seeming like you are doing so.
CM Attracts Prospect and Leads: This is a polity way of saying it can make $$$ for our company.
CM Fosters Brand Loyalty: This is a polite way of saying it can make $$$ for your company now and in the future.
CM Creates Thought Leadership: Let me translate: people will be buying what you?re selling, both figuratively and, if you play your cards right, literally.
CM Encourages Customer Engagement: You know when you are the first one to show up at a cocktail party thrown by someone you?ve never met, and there is that nervous moment where you both try to figure out what to talk about? Think of your Content Marketing piece as a natural conversation starter between you and your prospects, kind of like the weather, last night?s big game, or that person you both vaguely know that invited you.
CM Nurtures Leads Down the Sales Funnel: Put another way, decent marketing content turns skeptics into supporters.
CM is ?Pull,? not ?Push:? Some oft-overused marketing kitsch, rather than interrupting prospects with what the messaging you think they want to hear, CM strives to attract prospects by providing content that is useful to and sought by its intended audience. I?ll leave you to unravel that distinction.

What?s the bottom line? Marketing kitsch, buzzwords and buzzphrases aside, your company really does need content marketing. No, really?
